What does "Coltiva" mean?

Coltiva comes from the Italian word “to grow or cultivate”, which is something this
property has been doing for more than 150 years. The Gazzolos were Italian, and were
here doing most of the cultivating, so this name was chosen largely to honor them. It
also sounds a bit like “Coulter” and “Coulterville”, which adds recognition for the
founder of the town and the original property owner.
Environmentally Aware

All of the gardening at Coltiva is done organically and we make every effort to minimize
our impact on the environment.  We use environmentally friendly products wherever
possible, and for longer term guests, we schedule cleaning and fresh linens on
Mondays and Thursdays. If you need additional service, please let us know.
For the history buffs..

Mr. Coulter was the first merchant and the founder of our town. He built the
main house at the request of his wife in 1857, then sold the ranch to Giacomo
and Maria Gazzolo in 1869. The Gazzolos owned a restaurant, saloon, dance hall
and livery in town, and started the first stage line to Merced. On the ranch they raised
olives, vegetables, livestock...and seven children!    After Giacomo and Maria passed
away, their daughter Leonora made some improvements to the property and added
the guest cottage. By the time it was sold in 2002, the Gazzolo family had owned the
ranch for 133 years, and left a legacy of success and longevity for us to explore!
