In 1868. John Muir travelled on foot from the San Francisco Bay Area to
Yosemite Valley to explore the landscape and environment along the way.

Today, he is internationally recognized as a founder of the Sierra Club, the
man who talked President Roosevelt into making Yosemite National Park
and a prominent figure in the development of the modern environmental and
conservation movements.

Along his trip, John Muir spent time in Coulterville, and in his books, he describes
a variety of inspirational sights and memorable events from his stay here.  His
walk has become a landmark in American history, and in recent years, it has been
recreated by contemporary environmentalists eager to share his experience and
expand upon it wherever possible.

The original John Muir Route followed the general path of Hwy 132, and in June 2010
our community honored his memory by dedicating our section of that route as the John
Muir Highway. This dedicated section runs thirteen miles from Coulterville to Hwy 120,
which is the route our guests take to Yosemite every day.

We are proud to be a supporter of the John Muir Highway as well as residents of an
area with such historical significance. For more information on the John Muir Highway,
